The island's geographical location is among the most privileged in the world. Nowhere on Earth can so many resources and opportunities be found so happily combined: the beaches, wide, relaxing, and immaculately clean; the pine forests, oases of repose for adults and joy for children; hills offering the opportunity for invigorating walks; Mount Epomeo with its volcanic rocks inviting joyful excursions; the countryside stretching up to the hills of Ischia with its vineyards, orange groves, and chestnut groves; the boundless panoramas, vivid with a beauty that almost seems supernatural. But the island's treasures are not limited to the few we've been able to list. Ischia is also famous for its unique thermal springs. Thermal springs and mud baths can be found throughout the island, and a wide variety of treatments are available: from thermo-mineral baths to mud baths, from saunas to inhalations, and finally, mineral-marine baths, in bays and inlets where the mineral springs merge with the sea, creating extremely warm and healthy waters. Ischia boasts a beautiful sea, now protected by the Kingdom of Neptune Marine Natural Park, a marine reserve that preserves all the Mediterranean's characteristic marine species. Due to its diverse characteristics, the island is the ideal destination for those who enjoy a peaceful holiday on vast, golden beaches and strolls through pine forests; for those who enjoy spending their holidays in a festive, social atmosphere with luxury hotels, sports facilities, nightclubs, cinemas, and folklore events; for young people who enjoy sports; for seniors who want to recharge their batteries; for artists seeking inspiration while admiring unforgettable sunsets. Ischia has approximately 60,000 inhabitants and is administratively divided into six municipalities. Its roots are as distant as its history: around 770 BC, Greeks departing from the cities of Eretria and Chalcis founded Pithecusae, the first Western colony, on the promontory of Monte Vico. The Romans then arrived in Ischia and discovered the extraordinary properties of its hot waters.
Municipality of Ischia
Approximately 19,000 inhabitants, it has an ancient history. It has been known since ancient times for its clay vase industry, from which, according to Pliny, the island took one of its names: Pithecusa. The first inhabited center of Ischia was destroyed by the eruption of 302 BC, creating a lake. Subsequently, thanks to the creation of an inlet commissioned by Ferdinand II of Bourbon in 1854, the lake became the current port. The Municipality of Ischia is divided into two main residential areas: one near the port called Ischia Porto, and the hamlet of Ischia Ponte, which takes its name from the bridge connecting the Aragonese castle to the village. Other hamlets include Campagnano, San Domenico, San Michele, and Sant'Antuono.
Municipality of Lacco Ameno
With approximately 4,000 inhabitants (Lacchesi), it is located in a bay on the island's northwest coast. It is one of the island's main spa and seaside resorts. Its origins are ancient, as evidenced by the finds, dating from the Bronze Age to the Byzantine era, collected in the small archaeological museum housed in the sanctuary of Santa Restituta. This sanctuary, among the most important on Ischia, consists of a 19th-century church and a church dating back to the year 1000, beneath which lie the remains of an early Christian basilica. Due to its wealth of archaeological remains, a visit to the Archaeological Museum of "Pithecusae" at "Villa Arbusto" is recommended.
Municipality of Serrara Fontana
approximately 3,000 inhabitants (Serraresi); Among the island's inland towns, it possesses a unique rural charm, enhanced by the vast, enchanting panoramas. Situated over 400 meters above sea level, south of the volcanic massif of Mount Epomeo, from the Belvedere, which offers one of the most expansive views of the island, you can admire the charming fishing village in the foreground and the promontory of Sant'Angelo, whose bays constitute the municipality's marine gem, envied throughout the world.
Municipality of Casamicciola Terme
approximately 8,000 inhabitants (Casamicciolesi), is located on the island's northern coast. Its territory extends from the sea to the slopes of Mount Epomeo and is the only municipality to simultaneously border the island's five other municipalities. The 1883 earthquake almost completely destroyed it. It is a renowned tourist destination, both for its baths and spas, which exploit the local mineral water springs. The municipality has both a tourist port with approximately 300 berths and a commercial port with direct ferry and hydrofoil connections from Ischia to Naples and Pozzuoli.
Municipality of Forio d'Ischia
About 12,000 inhabitants (Foriani) is located in a panoramic position on a promontory on the western coast of the island of Ischia. Since prehistoric times, and even since Roman times, it has been a place known for the exploitation of its thermal waters, especially those of Citara. Its beach was dedicated to the cult of Venus Citherea and Apollo the Healer. Bathing in these waters for several days at a time, the Vestal Virgin Cecilia Metella regained her youth and health. More exposed than the other municipalities of Ischia to invasion, it built sixteen coastal towers for defense, the most prominent of which is the "Torrione," which overlooks the entire town. Forio, for the beauty of its beaches and its abundant greenery, is one of the most iconic parts of the island. A natural environment on the island where beauty and history, tourism and poetry coexist.
Municipality of Barano d'Ischia
About 10,000 inhabitants (Baranesi); Its exceptionally favorable natural location, approximately 200 meters above sea level, framed by green hills, gives Barano the privilege of a mild, dry climate year-round. Barano boasts the longest and most famous beach on the island, approximately two kilometers long. It is also renowned for the streams of thermal water that cascade down to the sand and the fumaroles that rise from the fiery sand. The Nitrodi and Olmitello springs are well known for the mineral properties of their waters; their therapeutic properties are renowned worldwide.
